| Key features and principles of the assessment practice: | Student teachers are required to complete an Exit Slip after each session (Altogether 10 sessions). On the Exit Slip, they are asked to reflect on and share what they have learnt from the class. In the following class, the lecturer selects some of the responses from the Exit Slips to share with the class. The lecturer give feedback in response to the student teachers’ learning (e.g., questions, unclear concepts about the education theories, elaborating some insights student teachers mention in the Exit Cards) When the course ends, all of the Exit Slips completed during the course are returned to the students, with responses from the lecturer on each slip. This allows the student teachers to chart his/her own learning journey throughout the whole course. |
| What are the best things about this assessment method? | The Exit Slips can be considered as a formative assessment strategy. Students’ responses in form of questions, sharing give the lecturer feedback on students’ students’ on-going thinking. This allows the lecturer to understand ‘where the learners are’. The lecturer gives feedback to move the learners forward. Examples of responses illustrating critical and deep reflection shared in the class offers exemplars of how to develop to be a reflective practitioner. The lecturer also adjusts/regulates his teaching teaching/progress of teaching based on evidence of student learning/responses/questions. |
| What are the challenges in implementing this assessment method? | The instructors may need to de-identify the responses when necessary as students may find it embarrassing to see their names on the PPT slide. To acknowledge the contribution of the student, the instructor can signal to the contributor during class (e.g., looking at the student when talking about the particular response in class) The instructor needs to purposely select and categorize the responses into themes and patterns such that the flow of the lesson is natural. A varieties of methods can be used when discussing the responses. Students may be asked to read the quotes on the PPT slide and identify common themes emerging from the responses. The instructor may also read aloud some sentences/key words on the quotes. The instructor may also initiate discussion of the issues/insights arising from the selected responses. Students may find it hard to reflect on their learning at the beginning. It is advised that the instructor can illustrate what critical and deep reflection entails using some of the responses in the Exit Slips as exemplars. |

(Any evaluation?) | “I think that many of my classmates have deep reflections, for instance, they think they should develop teaching materials that cater for diverse learning, which was something I didn’t think of. They are really good reflectors and I should learn from them.†“I have learnt a lot from other classmates!! (The way they analysed the pre- and post- test and their organisation of the answers) => I would like to see more opinions from my classmates†“Throughout the whole course, I think I have learned a lot of very useful theory and practical stuff for our future lessons. …. The course has been good for providing a platform for us to know more about how our peers think, to discuss and exchange idea with them, and with feedbacks and some instructions given by the instructor, I think this is a very good way to learn in this field.†|
